Research by the University of Southampton suggests that rogue waves are happening less often but are becoming more extreme. Waves are classed as rogue when they are over twice the height of the average sea state around them. From trough to peak, past observations have put some at over 30 meters (98 feet) high. When at their fiercest, they are capable of damaging or sinking ships, can wound or kill crew members and on occasions have swept people off the shoreline and out to sea.

The Marine Trades Industrial Park (MTIP) has completed the new washdown facility, a core piece of its infrastructure. The new installation will play a key part in attracting and keeping tenants at the MTIP. The MTIP was built on the site of the former PenPly mill after extensive environmental clean-up, paid for by a combination of Exxon Mobile, Rayonier and Port insurance. This state-of-the-art facility, built to accommodate vessels up to 175 feet long, replaces the old washdown which was not able to serve larger vessels.

The tragic loss of the U.S. cargo vessel El Faro along with its 33 member crew on October 1, 2015 led to the convening of a Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation tasked with determining as much as possible the cause(s) of the casualty. On October 1, 2017, the second anniversary of the casualty, the Marine Board released its report which is not final until approved by the Commandant. Deficiencies in the USCG Alternative Compliance Program were found to have played a major role in the incident.
