Eleven Airlifted from Cargo Ship in England after Heavy Weather Collision
On Sunday, November 20th, 2016, a cargo ship with 23 crew members lost power and collided with a barge after being caught in Storm Angus off of Dover, England.
A major search and rescue operation ensued after the UK Coastguard received a distress call from the Hong Kong-flagged Saga Sky at approximately 7:20 a.m. reporting it had lost power and steering. Heavy winds forced the ship to drift into a rock barge, damaging the hull of the Saga Sky and causing it to take on water.
11 crew members were airlifted from the deck by two Coastguard helicopters while the remaining 12 crew helped move the vessel to a safe anchorage with the aid of a tug. Inspectors were sent to the Saga Sky to assess the damage before the vessel was moved to a safe anchorage at Dungeness.
